Philosophy

Digital or analogue? Some people make it a religion. I firmly believe that what matters far more is mastering your tools and taking enough time. If you can do that – and do it – anything is possible!

Composition & Arrangement

Some of the questions that keep coming up during the creative process – and that I can help you with:

  • Are you generally lacking song material?
  • Do you have the infamous writer's block?
  • Your song is already quite good, but something is still missing to make it stand out?
  • Where's the hookline?
  • “I have an idea, but I don't know how to realise it.” Who can help me?
  • Do you want to turn a vocal idea with piano or guitar into a bombastic arrangement with orchestra?
  • You have an instrumental, but it still lacks a catchy vocal melody?

Vocal Recording and Production

Vocals – from delicate to raw, from solo to stadium sound

  • With my vocal booth I offer optimal possibilities for recording vocals.
  • If you want it to sound richer, you can often double or triple the vocals.
  • And backing vocals, i.e. second and third voices, can often take a song to a higher level.

Drum & Synth Programming

  • A classic band line-up and you want to give your songs an electronic or more modern touch?
  • Arpeggios, pads, atmospheres, sounds, loops, filtered, pulled through effects. There's a lot you can do …
  • Do you need drums for your ideas, but shy away from an expensive and possibly time-consuming drum recording? Drums programmed by an expert are a great alternative here.

Mixing

  • Mixing is all about achieving a powerful and transparent sound in which everything that is relevant can be heard.
  • Sometimes you have to take a step back and perhaps work on the arrangement again if there are too many signals in one frequency range.
  • Other important aspects are the distribution in the stereo image and the depth staggering, which can make a song appear much more lively.
  • “We fix it in the mix.” This oft-quoted saying is of course not completely wrong, but the better the source material, the better the result.
  • I work with the latest version of Cubase Pro, plus many high-quality plug-ins (e.g. from Waves or Native Instruments, to name but a few).

Mastering

  • Mastering today has various aspects. Many simply want a more powerful sound.
  • But apart from technical aspects such as preparing for a CD pressing, an album production is also about getting the songs into a good balance with each other.
  • It may make sense to create different masters for different media (social media, YouTube, CD, vinyl, radio), as additional and different compression is often applied there.
  • For me, the work of mastering primarily consists of assessing the result on many different monitor speakers and in many different listening situations and making corrections until it sounds good everywhere.
  • After all, a fat mix should not only sound good on expensive speakers.

Recording

  • For recording vocals, guitars, string instruments and more, a vocal booth is available in which the artist can communicate with me and see me during the recording.
  • In addition to all the technical aspects, I see one of my main tasks as making artists feel comfortable at my studio. Really great results can only be achieved in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

Re-Amping

  • Technology makes it possible: nowadays, the sound of practically any amplifier/speaker combination can be reproduced extremely realistically.
  • I record your dry guitar signal and you decide which amp we put it through.
  • Whether Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Engl, Fender, Orange or an exotic boutique amp: you're spoilt for choice. But don't worry, I'll help you ;-)

Cubase and Music Production Lessons

  • Do you want to produce your own music, but the hurdle of starting with a DAW like Cubase seems too high for now?
  • I am happy to teach you individually at the speed that works for you – at my studio or at your place if you live in Hamburg.
  • I am also happy to help you set up your home studio and get everything up and running so that you can really get started, be creative and not be annoyed by the technology.
  • Or are you already quite skilled, but have a specific problem you can't solve? I can certainly help you with that too.
  • Just get in touch – no strings attached.
